Four ways to use ‘just’ in a conversation

Do you know how to use the word ‘just’ in a conversation? This adverb is often used in natural speech, but it is used in different ways. It is also used in many common phrases. Below are four of the main ways ‘just’ is used including some of its more common phrases.


  1. Used to mean ‘only’

First, ‘just’ can be used to mean only or a small number. In the same way, it can also make language less direct.

Examples:

Someone ate the cookies and now there are just two left.

Now it’s just the two of us, so shall we take a taxi?

I just wanted to check you’re okay.

‘Just a minute’ is a common phrase where ‘just’ means only. It is used to ask someone to wait a short time, for example, Just a minute, I’m still getting ready.

‘Just saying’ a phrase where ‘just’ makes language less direct. It is used to give an opinion without upsetting the listener. For example, I think those pants are too big for you. Just saying.

2. Used to mean ‘right now’

‘Just’ is also used to mean right at this moment in time. It can also be used to mean right before this moment in time.

Examples:

A: Want to go for a coffee?  B: Can you wait? I’m just finishing my homework.

If you came here to see Mary, sorry, she just left.

‘Just in time’ is a common phrase where ‘just’ means right before the time runs out, for example, The bus was about to leave but Sam got there just in time.


3. Used to mean ‘exactly’

‘Just’ can also mean exactly, perfectly, or a very good match.

Examples:

A: Here, I bought you some new gloves.  B: Thank you, they’re just what I needed.

The weather wasn’t too hot or too cold. It was just right.

She looks just like her mother.

I had just enough money to buy the train ticket.


4. Used for emphasis

Finally, ‘just’ can also be used for emphasis or to make the language after it stronger. Here, the word ‘just’ might be given more stress.

Examples:

I just love my new shoes!

Just be quiet! I can’t hear the professor talking.

I just don’t understand why he’s so rude.
