The best way to do reading

Do you know what extensive reading is? It’s a great way to learn a language. It helps you read faster. It also helps build your vocabulary and grammar.

So, what is extensive reading? Extensive reading (ER) means doing a lot of easy reading. What is easy reading? It is reading where you understand almost everything. For example, if you read 100 words, only about three words are new to you. You can do the reading easily. You can do it without a dictionary.

Because you need to do a lot of reading, you need to enjoy it. So, find reading you like. Find reading you’re interested in. But this can be difficult. Because the reading also needs to be easy for you. Many books (or reading online) are not for language learners. They will be too difficult for you.

One idea is to use graded readers. These are books made for language learners. They have many different levels. They also have many different kinds. There are graded readers about great stories and movies. There are also graded readers about famous people and self-help. You can find graded readers online, in libraries, and in bookstores. Take time to find graded readers that are interesting and easy for you.

Some learners make mistakes. They start with reading that is too difficult. Then they can’t enjoy it. They stop reading. So it’s important to do reading that’s not too difficult. Maybe you’re not sure about your level. Then always choose easier reading and read more. You can also try the short test below (reading level test).

How much extensive reading should you do? Well, more is always better! Try to read more than four hours each week. If you enjoy the reading, you’ll want to read even more.

Extra tip!
Try to make a time for your reading. Try to do it the same time each day (eg. when riding the bus to school, after eating lunch). This will help you remember to do it each time. Also, try to to make your reading time quiet (eg. turn off your phone, wear headphones). This will help you enjoy your reading.
