TOEIC tip: Understand distractors

Do you know what distractors are? They are test answers that look correct but are wrong. They are often used in the TOEIC listening test, especially Part 2. Often one of the answer choices is a distractor. So, knowing about distractors can help you choose the correct answer.

Some distractors use the same word as the question. For example, the question is Can you show me how this printer works? and the distractor answer is Yes, the printer works well. The answer uses the same word as the question, but is wrong.

Some distractors use a word similar to a question word. For example, the question is Can I call you tomorrow? and the distractor answer is No, Tom is using the phone now. ‘Call’ is similar to the word ‘phone’, but the answer is wrong.

Some distractors use the same grammar as the question. For example, the question is Do you have some time for a meeting today? and the distractor answer is Yes, I have three of them. The answer uses the same grammar as the question but is wrong.

Extra tip!
When doing listening practice tests, try to focus on the meaning of the question. The correct answer may not have a clear vocabulary or grammar link to the question. After finishing, check your answers. Read the listening transcripts. Were any of your mistakes distractors?
